U of M mourns loss of student Jennifer Houle, who is presumed dead

More than 1,000 people gathered for an emotional vigil for University of Minnesota student Jennifer Houle Tuesday evening on the U of M campus. Houle, 22, has been missing since early Friday morning after going out with friends, and is presumed dead.

The crowd, many of whom were students and members of Houle's sorority, Pi Beta Phi, came together in front of Coffman Union carrying candles and balloons, according to the Star Tribune.

Houle's parents were in attendance but did not speak to the crowd, the newspaper notes.

Police said Monday that a video shows Houle entered the Mississippi River from the 10th Avenue bridge shortly after she was last seen, and authorities have been searching the river for her body.

Police have said it isn't clear whether she fell off the 110-foot high bridge or whether she jumped. But they have said she was alone at the time.

Officials are not seeking any suspects in the case.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the search of the river.
