An unspecific, uncorroborated threat may force schools in Wisconsin's Menomonie School District to close Wednesday.

The city's police department and the school district have been issuing updates on Facebook, starting with a Friday note about a "specific" threat found at Menomonie High School. The nature of that threat was not – and still hasn't been – detailed.

On Sunday, the police department said while there were no disruptions at events over the weekend, there have been no developments in the investigation of the threat, or who made it. It has still "not been corroborated," police said.

But unless the case is solved in the next day, the district will cancel all classes and activities for Wednesday, at all of its schools. A final decision will be made on Tuesday 4 p.m.

Classes will go on as normal the remaining four days of the week. On Monday, students will get "age-appropriate" information concerning what's going on, police said. Counselors are also on hand for students, and Menomonie police will have an increased presence at the schools (specifically the high school).

Shortly after, officials issued another update, acknowledging the lack of information being passed on to the public and thanking them for the "patience and understanding."

"I understand in today’s society we are used to having instant access to information about events that are important to us," the update reads. Thus, when a government entity releases only a small amount of information pertaining to an ongoing investigation it is exceptionally frustrating. This is even more so when the investigation involves our community’s children."

The department is trying to balance the needs of the investigation with public safety, the note says.

School threats

There have been a number of threats made against area schools this year, including:

– Days ago, two college students were arrested and charged after entering a South Dakota high school without permission. They were later found to be in possession of guns and 200 rounds of ammunition. There's no evidence there was a plot against the school, however.

– A threat of violence at an Aberdeen, South Dakota, high school in October, that led to increased police presence.

– An arrest days earlier in Cottonwood County, after threats against Fairmont area schools were discovered on Yik Yak.

– A Rosemount school was put on lockdown in June following a gun threat.

– In January, two high schools in Minneapolis were disrupted after threats on back-to-back days.

– Also that month, an 11-year-old in Rush City was arrested after a threatening note was left on an elementary school wall.
