Unusual collisions lead to several fatalities this weekend

Four people are dead after three separate collisions in the area Saturday and Sunday.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Burlington Northern train Sunday afternoon in Coon Rapids.

The victim was a 31-year-old man from Coon Rapids, according to the Star Tribune, although his name has not yet been released. The man was struck in an area that was not a designated rail crossing, the paper notes.

Train traffic in both directions was suspended while authorities investigated the accident, according to a spokeswoman for the railroad.

Buggy collision

A 21-year-old father and his 6-month old son died Saturday morning, when a pickup truck rear-ended their horse-drawn buggy in Colburn, Wis.

The Associated Press reports that three passengers were thrown from the buggy. The two died at the scene, and the 21-year-old mother is in the hospital with "extensive injuries."

The Chippewa County Sheriff's office says alcohol is not a factor.

Pillar crash

A driver was killed Sunday morning after his car struck an overpass pillar near Blue Earth.

The victim was identified as 28-year-old Tyler S. Turner of Albert Lea, the Star Tribune reports.

No one else was in the car.
