Update on the forecast for Monday's snow, freezing rain

The National Weather Service has backed off a bit on snowfall projections.

The storm system the National Weather Service first started warning Minnesotans about on Thursday is still on track to produce wintry weather Sunday-Tuesday.

As of now, the NWS Twin Cities branch says the storm system has shifted slightly north, meaning warmer air could mean the precipitation in parts of southern Minnesota begins as a mixture or as freezing rain before changing over to all snow Monday night into Tuesday.

How much snow? 3-7 inches possibly, but less where precipitation begins as a mixture or freezing rain.

"Roughly speaking, the northern half of the coverage area may be subject to 3 to 7 inches of snow Sunday through Tuesday with less than 3 inches south of a Redwood Falls-Twin Cities-Eau Claire line," the NWS's forecast discussion says.

Areas that experience freezing rain could see the ice accumulate, perhaps up to a tenth of an inch of ice south of a Manakato-Eau Claire line.

In his blog at the Star Tribune, meteorologist Paul Douglas says the storm doesn't look as impressive as it did just 24 hours ago.

"Models are hinting at a coating to an inch of slush over the weekend, maybe 2-4" on Monday," says Douglas, "but the projections have come down from yesterday's runs. The first draft of history is usually inaccurate - so are early weather model runs.".

Meanwhile, it's cold again. Temperates across the state plummeted 30-40 degrees in most places.
