Update: Target will actually close 2 stores in Minnesota

It's not just Fergus Falls – a Twin Cities suburb will be losing its Target as well.

Two Minnesota communities have been dealt a blow with Target announcing their local stores will be closing.

GoMN has already reported that Fergus Falls is losing its store, leading to a big effort from the community to save it. But it's since emerged that the store in Hastings will also be closing this February.

Workers in Hastings were told on Monday their store will close for good on Feb. 3, with Target confirming as much to GoMN.

The 2 Minnesota stores are among 12 across the country that are being closed.

"This decision was not made lightly. We have a rigorous process in place to evaluate the performance of every store on an annual basis, closing or relocating underperforming locations as needed," spokesperson Kristy Welker said. "Typically, a store is closed as a result of seeing several years of decreasing profitability."

A petition to save the Fergus Falls store signed by more than 6,000 people has already been launched. Another has been created to save the Hastings store.

"Walmart should not be the only option," one person who signed the petition wrote. "Invest in improving that Target and keep it open!!!"

Target staff workers will be offered positions where possible at alternative locations, and Hastings residents and workers won't have too far to travel to reach the next nearest Target in Cottage Grove, just under 10 miles away.

But those living in Fergus Falls face a longer journey, with the closest store in Alexandria – around a 50-minute drive away.

The following Targets will close in February:

– Eastland (in Harper Woods, Michigan)

– Hutchinson, Kansas

– Benton Harbor, Michigan

– Fergus Falls, Minn.

– Hastings, Minn.

– Macon, Georgia

– Slidell, Louisiana

– Lauderhill, Florida

– Matteson, Ill.

– Romeoville, Ill.

– Baltimore West

– San Antonio Far East
