US Navy's new combat ship will be named after the Twin Cities

The names of the Twin Cities will be emblazoned on the next combat ship to be built for the U.S. Navy.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced Friday its next littoral combat ship (meaning a smaller vessel, meant to be operated near shores) will be named the "USS Minneapolis/St. Paul."

The name was chosen to "honor the citizens of Minnesota's Twin Cities who have a long proud history of naval service."

It will mean the Twin Cities is once again represented among Navy ships, with the previous owner of the "USS Minneapolis/St. Paul" name – a nuclear submarine built in 1984 – deactivated and then decommissioned in 2008, according to America's Navy.

The submarine was involved in a tragic accident in 2006, when two crewmen were swept overboard in rough seas near Plymouth Sound, as reported by the BBC.

So what can we expect from the new USS Minneapolis/St. Paul? Well the DoD says it will be a "fast, agile surface combatant," with a mixture of "war fighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute a variety of missions."

These missions include "mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare" missions.

The ship itself will be built across the border in Marinette, Wisconsin, and will measure 388 feet long. It will be capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots, the release says.

The Navy currently has 273 deployable battle force ships, according to its website, with 85 of them deployed.
