The U.S. men's national soccer team needs a new head coach after Jurgen Klinsmann was fired Monday afternoon.

Klinsmann has been under intense scrutiny ever since the national team lost 4-0 to Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifying match last week. They also lost a home qualifier (2-1 to Mexico) for the first time in 15 years, according to the New York Times.

A team spokesperson released a statement expressing confidence that the U.S. will still be able to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

"While we remain confident that we have quality players to help us advance to Russia 2018, the form and growth of the team up to this point left us convinced that we need to go in a different direction. With the next qualifying match in late March, we have several months to refocus the group and determine the best way forward to ensure a successful journey to qualify for our eighth-consecutive World Cup."

The U.S. men's national team doesn't play another qualifying match until they meet Honduras and Panama in late March.
