'Valiant Vito' – the cancer-fighting superhero – is tumor free after surgery

The brave toddler who has been fighting a rare brain cancer dressed as a superhero is tumor free after his latest operation.

The family of Waconia tot Victor Skaro – dubbed "Valiant Vito" – shared the joyous news on his Facebook page, saying surgery to remove a medulloblastoma from his brain has been successful.

"My God I have no words. No words at all. WE ARE TUMOR FREE!!!!!!! DEAR GOD WE ARE TUMOR FREE!!!!!!!!," his mother, Nicole Skaro, wrote. "Thank you for your prayers. My heart swells with such love. My son is tumor free!"

Vito hit the headlines and broke hearts across Minnesota when he celebrated Christmas on the ward at the Children's Hospital of Minnesota dressed in a Superman cape holding a sign saying: "All I want for Christmas is to be cancer free."

And the removal of the brain tumor is a good first step for the 16-month-old, though his mother has said there is still a long way to go before he can be declared cancer-free.

KARE 11 reports Vito will still need around eight more months of chemotherapy to make sure all the cancer is gone from his body, with the family hoping to avoid radiation that could damage his still-developing brain.

They are still waiting for doctors to remove his breathing tubes, but say he has been doing well since coming out of surgery Tuesday.

"We won a battle, but haven't won the war yet," Nicole Skaro wrote on Facebook Wednesday morning. "We long for the day we can say we are cancer free. But today, today we are enjoying that a nasty, complicated tumor was unable to stand up to our super Vito."
