Vandals have cut down half a dozen trees in a park in Bemidji, Minn., on one of the holes of the disc golf course, the Forum News Service reports.

The Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department posted the information on its Facebook page, saying five Burr Oak trees and one mountain ash tree were chopped down this week near the disc golf course trail at City Park.

Burr Oaks are slow-growing trees, and "an extremely valuable natural resource," the department said.

The largest tree was estimated to be about 38 years old, and the others were around 20 years old, according to the parks department.

"It appears they cut the trees to change the course — make a new lane for the fairway," the post said.

"It's difficult to estimate a replacement value for the trees, as replacing them due to the size and age is impossible," the post said.

If the city plants new saplings to replace those that were cut down, it'll cost about $350 per tree.

Bemidji's 18-hole disc golf course opened in 1998.

It just so happens that there's a disc golf tournament going on in Minnesota this weekend -- the Minnesota Amateur Disc Golf Championships -- which is being held at the disc golf course at Kaposia Park in South St. Paul. The competition began on Saturday and finishes up on Sunday.

Disc golf is quite a popular activity in Minnesota, and there are dozens of disc golf courses around the state which you can usually use for no charge. Here's a list of cities that have disc golf courses.

The Minnesota Frisbee Association has more information on how to get involved in the sport.
