Vandals target church that has supported gay marriage

Vandals struck a Maple Grove church that has been supportive of same-sex marriage, KARE 11 reports.

Sunday morning worshippers at Pilgrims United Church of Christ found the message "church of Soddom and Gomorrah" scrawled on the exterior walls, KARE reported. Eggs had been thrown at church windows. Church leaders believe they were targeted because of their stance on gay marriage.

"We are a very progressive voice in Maple Grove," Pastor Robin Raudabaugh told KARE. "This was a very hate-filled act."

On Sunday, congregants sung uplifting hymns, made plans to clean up the mess and took solace in the fact that "our message is getting out," the pastor told KARE. The church has been hit by graffiti before and marriage amendment "Vote No" signs were removed from church property last fall, KARE reported.

Maple Grove police said they would keep a closer watch on the church, KARE reported. There is no surveillance video to aid in their investigation of the incident, KARE reported:

Minnesota this year became the 12th state to allow same-sex marriage.

Gay marriage supporters rallying

St. Paul-area Lutherans assembling in Burnsville, and separately, Gov. Mark Dayton and other activists holding "house parties" around the state, demonstrated their opposition to an amendment to the state Constitution that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
