Vandals trash Native American school in Minneapolis over Thanksgiving Weekend

The school's vans were stolen, and classrooms were defaced.

Burglars broke into a school that serves primarily Native Americans in Minneapolis over Thanksgiving Weekend, going on a vandalism spree that left ruin in its wake.

Not content with stealing two vans that belong to the Nawayee Center School, pieces of art that students had worked on for months were defaced with spray paint.

To add insult to injury, the suspects ran off with the school's hamster.

The crime has left the grade 7-12 school in the East Philips neighborhood of Minneapolis counting the cost.

Aid though has arrived in the form of a generous community donating money to help staff get it back on its feet.

A $10,000 fundraising target on its GoFundMe page was surpassed in less than 24 hours, with almost $12,000 raised as of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The burglars struck some time after cleaners locked up last Tuesday, laying waste to classrooms and smashing floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground level.

CityPages reports they also graffitied a washer-dryer that the school just received as a donation, which it used to wash the clothes of the several homeless children it educates.

The magazine notes cleaners forgot to set the security alarms after locking up, and with no security cameras inside it's impossible to know when the thieves struck.

Among those denouncing the actions of the vandals is ward councilor Alondra Cano, who said she was "shocked and sickened" by the break-in.
