A longtime racer was killed in a crash at the Brainerd International Raceway on Sunday.
The driver, identified by the Brainerd Dispatch as 70-year-old Mel Shaw of New Jersey, crashed into the outside barrier on turn three of the track during a Sports Car Club of America race, a news release says.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident happened around 2:22 p.m. The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.
The Brainerd Dispatch says Shaw is a veteran of the racing industry, noting he began racing nearly 50 years ago.
This is the fifth fatality at the Brainerd International Raceway in the track's nearly 50 year history, the paper says.
