Veterans rally at Minnesota memorial to show anger over shutdown

Minnesota veterans converged on the Vietnam War Memorial in St. Paul Sunday to express their anger over the federal government shutdown that's heading into its third week.

KSTP reports one of the speakers shouted at the dozens who rallied "We need to be mad." One of the organizers, Sgt. Gary Patterson, tells the station he's ashamed that our elected officials allowed the shutdown to happen.

The Minnesota event was tied to a similar protest in Washington D.C., which was dubbed the Million Vet March on the Memorials. Demonstrators at the World War II and Lincoln Memorials protested the closure of those monuments. They're normally staffed by National Park Service personnel who have been furloughed by the shutdown.

CBS reports protesters pushed through barricades and some carried those barricades to the gates of the White House, where they were stopped by police in riot gear.

Meanwhile, Sunday's talks between the Democratic and Republican leaders of the U.S. Senate failed to produce an agreement to reopen the government and avoid defaulting on the nation's debt payments. The Associated Press reports a bipartisan group of a dozen Senators is pushing a proposal that would raise the debt limit and fund the government at existing levels through the end of January.

Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar said on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will not accept everything in the proposal but "knows there are some positive things" in it.

Thursday is the deadline by which the U.S. will default on its debt payments unless there's an agreement to raise the debt limit.
