Solid State is a new record store opening up this week in south Minneapolis.

Co-owners Phil and Hannah Borreson told GoMN it is much more than just another shop for vinyl.

In addition to selling vinyl records, cassettes, DVDs, video games and equipment, Solid State will sell original handbags, jewelry, and home goods by Hannah. Other local artists with wares in the shop include Nicole Pfeifer (handmade pendants) and Cassandra Leroy (music-inspired paintings).

Local musicians will also be highlighted at the shop through in-store performances.

The text that started it all

Even though the Borresons have been working on a business plan for quite a while, settling on the location felt a little spontaneous.

During a weekend trip to Duluth, the couple received a text message from a friend about an open space where the owner was interested in opening a record store. They laughed at first, but then instantly felt like the opportunity would be perfect.

From record collecting to record selling

Phil's vinyl appreciation began when he was a DJ at Radio K at the U of M. He co-hosted a show called "Last Year's Model" and collected New Wave records during his spare time. The collection was something to spin on-air, but also to build the foundation of his personal stock.

Hannah was raised in a household with a music-loving dad who would always play records loud and proud. She also visited secondhand shops and antique stores while growing up.

A local art nook

Vintage pieces and repurposing old items have influenced Hannah as a textile designer. She has been designing apparel and accessories since 2005.

Before opening up her own Etsy shop, she consigned original pieces to local shops including Cliche and Parc Boutique. The community support she received is something she hopes to bring to Solid State.

An all-capturing name

The name, Solid State, is the outcome of a two-hour brainstorm session with Phil, Hannah and friends at a bar. The name resonated, because the solid state electronics, including the transistor, reflected the music side of the shop. And the use of the word "solid" reminded the couple of the sturdiness of Hannah's handcrafted items like leather handbags and wooden cheese boards.

Grand opening

Solid State will officially open up shop on Saturday, December 17.

Phil said this week's customers will get the "first crack at some really awesome stuff." He added that after months of building up their stock, they came across rare Miles Davis records and original pressings of some Atmosphere records.

Solid State is located in the building that used to be the Pink Closet consignment shop at 4022 East 46th Street near Minnehaha Avenue and just a few blocks north of Minnehaha Falls.
