Watch: Baby bears rescued from a dumpster

Mama bear watched from a tree nearby.

How does a bear get into a dumpster that's barred shut?

That's still a mystery for the workers at Cascade Vacation Rentals in Lutsen, Minnesota.

According to their Facebook post, a housekeeper at the resort was throwing out some trash Wednesday morning was she was startled by a bear amidst the bags of garbage.

The post says she texted her boss: "I just went to dumpster and both bars were on it and when I opened it the bear was sitting in the dumpster!! I wonder how that is even possible with it being barred shut?!? I ran off with my trash but didn’t put the bars back on or look to see if the bear jumped out."

When backup (the rest of the Cascade Vacation Rentals crew) arrived, the bear was hanging out in a nearby tree. Owner Steve Surbaugh thought it was odd that the bear was sticking around, the post says, so he went to investigate – and found two cubs in the dumpster.

The babies weren't able to get out on their own, so the crew fashioned a ladder out of a broken futon.

The plan worked. The cubs climbed out and were reunited with their mama.

Watch the great escape:
