A suspected drunk father fled with his children in his truck after police tried to talk to him – and they were on a frozen lake at the time.

The incident unfolded on Green Lake in Chisago County on Wednesday, with onlooker Douglas Dircks taking a video that was later shared on the Fishesota Facebook page.

According to the Chisago County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Dan Ackerman was doing a routine patrol when some concerned citizens reported a "very intoxicated person" on the lake with his children in his truck.

When Deputy Ackerman made contact with the driver, he jumped into his vehicle and took off, leading police on a pursuit across the frozen ice with his children in the back.

Once off the lake, the driver stopped and had to be removed from the vehicle by officers. He was arrested for second-degree DWI and fleeing in a motor vehicle.

"Thank you to those who reported this. The kids are safe and we are happy that Deputy Ackerman was at the right place and the right time!" the Sheriff's Office said on Facebook.

The most recent statistics show a trend that drunk driving is on the decline in Minnesota, with 25,027 DWI arrests in 2015 a drop on the 25,386 made in 2014. Arrests have almost halved since 2006, when there were 42,007.

Drunk-driving-related deaths however rose in 2015, with 95 confirmed killed – up from 88 in 2014 and 81 in 2013.

Green Lake Pursuit

This afternoon some concerned citizens reported that a very intoxicated person was on Green Lake with his children in the vehicle. It just so happened that Deputy Ackerman was doing routine patrol on that lake and made contact with the driver outside of his vehicle.

The driver jumped into his vehicle (with his kids in the car) and led the deputy on a pursuit. The driver drove off the lake, stopped his vehicle, but refused to get out of it. He was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody. He was arrested for 2nd Degree DWI and Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle.

Thank you to those who reported this. The kids are safe and we are happy that Deputy Ackerman was at the right place and the right time!

The video is taken from someone that was on the lake and posted on the Fishesota Facebook group. It is posted here with permission from their Admin. Some of the audio was edited due to language.
