Weather whiplash: 90 degrees expected Tuesday

Fresh from an icy Fishing Opener, and temperatures that dipped into the 20s in northern reaches of the state, Minnesota is about to slingshot itself into summer – for one day.

After a high of about 70 on Monday in the metro, expect 90 on Tuesday in the Twin Cities (it's been since Sept. 11, 2012 that the metro hit that high), WCCO says.

MPR is calling it "instant July" – from furnace to air-conditioning weather in 36 hours. More Tuesday temps: 72 in International Falls, 82 in Bemidji, 89 in Worthington and 75 in Duluth, WCCO says.

It's an early heat wave – the median first date for hitting 90 degrees is June 4 in the metro, although the first 90-degree day last year was May 18, KARE 11 reports. Last year the metro had 31 days in the 90s, when normal is 13, KARE reported.

There's a fire weather watch for most of the central and southern parts of the state on Tuesday, the National Weather Service says. Low humidity and strong breezes increase the risk of brush fires.

But temperatures will drop back down into the normal range for much of the state most of the rest of the week, forecasters say. There's a chance of rain, possibly some stormy weather, closer to the weekend.

It seems like only yesterday that a lingering winter still had Minnesota in its clutches. Oh yeah, it was yesterday. The temperature in International Falls fell to 22 degrees early Sunday morning, tying its record low temperature for the date. Other notable temps Sunday: 21 degrees in Pine River, and 23 degrees in Hibbing, Crane Lake, Wright and Kabetogama, Forum Communications reported.

100 degrees? Probably not – but hot

Temperatures won't hit the century mark after all on Thursday, despite earlier predictions. It'll be muggy, though, with a predicted high of 92 Wednesday and 94 on Thursday in the Twin Cities, the National Weather Service says.
