Web Catch: Barbie's new ad crushes gender stereotypes, features little boy

Author:

Moschino Barbie – Mattel's tie-in with the high-end fashion brand – sold out in less than hour after her release last week, Washington Post reports.

But it's the advertisement for the doll that has the Internet talking this week. The ad prominently features a little boy, which means it's a trailblazer, as Barbie commercials go. So far it's been viewed more than 1.5 million times on YouTube.

“Moschino Barbie is so fierce!” the boy exclaims before adding a purse to the $150 doll's arm. (As Vogue reports, many have been relisted on eBay for resale values ranging from $400 to $800.)

It's the latest move toward gender-neutral marketing for children. Minneapolis-based retailer Target announced the removal of "boy" and "girl" designations from toy aisles earlier this year after the following tweet went viral.
