What's open and closed on Christmas Eve?

Christmas Eve tends to be a normal business day, although many services, retailers and companies are likely to be running on reduced hours.

Here's a few things you need to know about how things are operating today.

Post Offices

USPS branches will be open today, but the postal service has warned that many will shorten their lobby hours and close at noon.

Hours of operation will depend on individual post offices. You can find your local branch hours here.

Mail should be delivered as usual.

People needing to make some last minute purchases can still do so, but be warned most malls are shutting up by the evening. Here are the Christmas Eve opening hours of some major Twin Cities malls:

Mall of America: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Rosedale Center: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Southdale Center: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Ridgedale Center: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Eden Prairie Mall: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Twin Cities Premium Outlets (Eagan): 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Individual retailers

While malls may be shutting early, some individual stores will be open later for anyone who really wants to leave it till the last minute.

Target: The Minnesota-based retailer will be open later than most, with doors not shutting until 11 p.m. tonight, CBS reports.

Walmart:InvestorPlace reports Walmart is keeping its stores (including Super Walmart) open until 8 p.m.

Walgreens: Most Walgreens are open all-year round according to HolidayShoppingHours, with many staying open 24 hours even over Christmas, though some do close early. Check your local store for hours.

Macy's: Will be open 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Best Buy: Full stores to open 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., mobile stores closing at 4 p.m.

Kohl's: Stores have been open 24 hours for several days now as part of its Christmas push, but will close at 6 p.m tonight.

Toys 'R' Us: Stores will close at 9 p.m. tonight.

Herberger's: Open until 6 p.m.

Metro Transit is running a Saturday service in the Twin Cities, affecting bus and light rail schedules.

Some other transit operators are doing the same, including the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority, SouthWest Transit and Maple Grove Transit – more information on which can be found here. Plymouth Metrolink services are running as usual.

Government buildings

Christmas Eve is not a public holiday for local authorities in Minnesota – that's Christmas Day – so most federal, state and county offices should be open today – though local city offices could be closed.

It's best to check before you go, as even those that are open could have reduced hours.

Banks should be open today, but Heavy.com notes they are likely to have reduced hours.

Wells Fargo plans on closing its branches at 2 p.m.

TCF Bank's traditional branches will open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but its supermarket branches in Minnesota will be open a bit longer, until 4 p.m.

Bank of America will also be closing early today, call your local branch to check at what time.
