Fewer overnighters

There are some changes compared to recent pre-Black Friday shopping this year.

After REI and other retailers announced they won't be opening for customers on Thanksgiving, some malls have changed their tune and won't stay open all night long.

The Star Tribune reports several Twin Cities-area shopping malls are putting the kibosh on all-nighters, and will close late Thursday, before reopening bright and early on Friday.

The reason? Most of the business was happening before midnight on Thanksgiving, so it didn't really make sense to stay open all night long, the paper notes.

Although many malls are deciding to close overnight ahead of Black Friday, many big-box stores will stay open, the Star Tribune says. That includes Target, Kohl's, Wal-Mart, Macy's and J.C. Penney, among others.

However, some boutique stores in the Twin Cities are changing the way they do Black Friday, MSP Mag reports. Some are donating a portion of sales to charity, while others are ending their early morning discounts altogether – encouraging customers to sleep in.

The website BestBlackFriday.com has been keeping a running list of what retailers are closed on Thanksgiving. The website also has several other lists, including the best Black Friday deals.

As for what else is closed on Thanksgiving: City, state and federal government offices as well as the stock market are closed, while some grocery stores and other shops will be open.
