Where we eat: Homemade pie at Stockholm Pie & General Store is a nostalgic treat

Stockholm Pie & General Store serves up excellent homemade pie and a trip down memory lane.

Stockholm is a small town, population 66, that overlooks scenic Lake Pepin. It’s about an hour south of St. Paul, on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River.

Western Wisconsin is becoming known as a foodie destination. There are wineries, pizza farms, and great restaurants in the area. And there’s the Stockholm Pie & General Store.

Whether you’re road tripping or seeking out great pie on a Sunday drive, you’re in for a treat. While you’re in town, check out the art galleries and shops lining the quaint streets.

What to eat

The pie.

A good pie starts with a good crust, and Stockholm Pie & General Store knows that.

Each pie is made from scratch, one at a time. The crusts are made from scratch, and are extra flaky. Each filling is homemade too, as well as the whipped cream and meringue. From crust to topping, you’re getting an authentic, old-fashioned pie experience.

We tried the cherry pie and the triple chocolate pecan pie. Both were exceptional, and very distinct. The cherry pie had a tart filling, offset by a flaky double crust. The triple chocolate pecan pie was rich and indulgent, sure to satisfy any chocolate lover.

Steve Grams -- one of Stockholm Pie & General Store’s three owners -- cites the shop’s success on a quality product and nostalgic experience.

“People are so busy. Nobody has time to make homemade pie from scratch anymore. What we do is nostalgic. We offer people the chance to relax and step back in time, to enjoy a slice of pie like mom or grandma used to make.”

The general store portion of the building features a variety of local products including cheese, canned goods, and beer. The shop also sells espresso drinks, cookies, pot pies, and sandwiches.

The vibe

Like stepping into grandma’s farmhouse kitchen. The space is bright and cozy. During their busy season – from June to late October – there’s often a line to the door.

The pie shop pulls in customers from all over, mostly from the Twin Cities, but also from Hudson, Rochester, La Crosse, and other towns in the region.

Prices and hours

Slices of pie are $5.95 each.

Most of the year, the shop is open every day except Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours change in the winter, however, so be sure to check the website for updates.

You can find out more about Stockholm Pie & General Store on its website and Facebook page.
