Which stores will be open – and which will be closed – this Thanksgiving

And which ones will be closed.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on whether stores should stay open on Thanksgiving day.

In years past, Black Friday sales have started earlier and earlier, until Black Thursday was pretty much a thing. But many got upset that Black Friday was overshadowing Turkey Day – a time for families to spend quality time together, not shopping. (Not to mention, the retail employees who miss out on the holiday because they have to be at work.)

Some retailers began opting out, often making the announcement not to open on Thanksgiving with a statement about family values. Last year, only 3 stores opened in the Mall of America on Thanksgiving, and groups like Boycott Black Thursday gained support from unhappy Americans.

This year, it looks like a bit of a mixed bag.

Plenty of retailers have announced they'll be open at least part of Thanksgiving day, including:

  • Walmart
  • Macy's
  • Best Buy
  • Target
  • Kohl's
  • Toys 'R Us
  • JC Penney
  • Sears
  • Gander Mountain
  • Dicks Sporting Goods

Some of those stores even have plans to start sales on Wednesday. See the full list of stores that will be open on Thanksgiving here, from BlackFriday.com.
