Why was your commute delayed? A suspicious package in downtown Minneapolis

Traffic was backed up around downtown Minneapolis after police shut down an intersection to deal with a suspicious package.

Minneapolis police shut down Hennepin Avenue South and 7th Street South around 8 a.m. following the discovery of the package, with drivers warned to take alternate routes.

The package was deemed safe and the road re-opened around 8:50 a.m., but not before it had a big impact on commutes for thousands of workers.

KSTP tweeted a picture of the situation on I-394, where huge lines backed up west of downtown.

Sgt. Christine Michael, who was herself stuck in traffic, told the Star Tribune all traffic including Metro buses and pedestrians were kept away from the intersection while the bomb squad responded.
