Officials order Loch Ness out of Chippewa River

The sculpture, nicknamed Nessie, appeared in Eau Claire a couple weeks ago, but the Wisconsin DNR wants the illegal obstruction removed from the river to ensure the public's safety. The artist claiming to be the creator told the Leader-Telegram it will be removed within 10 days. A few years ago, a similar sculpture also appeared in Lake Harriet and Lake of the Isles in the Twin Cities.

Three minors killed in single-car crash

Three Wisconsin teens are dead after a single-vehicle crash Tuesday night. The Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department told the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed. Two other minors were injured. A toxicology test will be conducted on the driver, but alcohol is not suspected.

Wisconsin minors were 'hill jumping' before fatal crash

The Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department says the group of Wisconsin teenagers involved in a deadly single-vehicle crash last month were "hill jumping." Three teens, including the driver, died in the crash. Two other minors were badly injured. The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reports the 14-year-old driver was traveling 25-35 miles per hour above the 55 mph speed limit. The county attorney will now decide whether to file any charges.

Wisconsin's DNR is letting hunters take 201 gray wolves this fall. 85 of those will be reserved for Chippewa bands based on 19th Century treaties in which the tribe retained hunting rights in northern Wisconsin.

Federal settlement near for Minnesota Chippewa

The Duluth News Tribune says a bill advancing through D.C. would release a $28 million payout to six Chippewa bands in northern Minnesota. The money is meant as compensation for timber and land the government took from reservations 123 years ago.

Minnesota has about 3,000 public access points to lakes and rivers, but the Minnesota DNR has only 118 inspectors charged with keeping invasive species out of the lakes and rivers. The DNR says about 20 percent of boaters they check are violating laws by not pulling boat plugs, draining water or removing weeds from their vessels.
