Pedestrian hit and killed by train in northwestern Minnesota

It happened Saturday night in Detroit Lakes.

A woman was hit and killed by a freight train in northwestern Minnesota this weekend.

According to a news release, the Detroit Lakes Police Department responded to a call around 9 p.m. Saturday night. A pedestrian had been struck by a train near the depot at Washington Ave. and Hwy. 10.

The department says paramedics arrived to find a 56-year-old woman dead on the tracks. She was from the Detroit Lakes area – her identity is not being released at this time.

A spokeswoman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad told the Star Tribune that train traffic in the area was put to a halt as officials responded to the scene until shortly after midnight.

The train was hauling oil westbound on tracks that run alongside Hwy. 10, the Star Tribune notes.

Authorities have not released the circumstances leading up to the incident.
