Woman hit, dragged by delivery truck in Minneapolis dies

A 25-year-old woman hit and dragged by a delivery truck in Minneapolis has died from her injuries, KSTP reports.

The Minneapolis Police Department says Caitlan Barton of Savage died Thursday. Police say Barton was crossing the street near Lake Calhoun, at the intersection of Market Boulevard and West Lake Street, around 6 p.m. Wednesday when she was struck by a DHL delivery vehicle and dragged a short distance.

According to the Pioneer Press, police say the woman began crossing the street when the traffic light turned green.

A witness who was crossing the street near Barton told the Star Tribune, “The driver got out and said, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK? Someone, call an ambulance!’”

MPD spokesman John Elder told FOX 9 that the intersection is hectic for both drivers and pedestrians.

"It's a real long red light there," Elder said. "If that driver was stopped at the light and she came up on the side, he may not have ever seen her approach."

Police say Barton suffered "substantial injuries" and was hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center.

KSTP confirmed with DHL that the driver – who has not been identified – was an independent contractor by North Star Logistics in the Twin Cities.

Police say the driver remained on the scene of the accident and is cooperating with investigators. Authorities don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved. Charges have not yet been filed.
