Woman in coma after being deliberately hit with car, police say

Author:

A woman is in a coma after she was deliberately run over and dragged along the street by a driver in downtown Minneapolis over the weekend, the Star Tribune reports.

Miera Horton, 26, of Minneapolis, is in a critical condition in Hennepin County Medical Center after she was hit by the car at around 1 a.m. Saturday in the 500 block of Hennepin Avenue, police told the newspaper.

Arrested at the scene and jailed on suspicion of assault with a dangerous weapon was a 24-year-old woman from Brooklyn Park, who is said to have admitted to officers that she was behind the wheel, according to WCCO. She has yet to be charged.

A police report says the woman "veered toward" Horton, who was trying to get out of the way. Horton was struck and dragged by the car before it rammed into another vehicle from behind, WCCO reports.

Police spokesman John Elder told the Star Tribune the incident was the result of an "alleged previous altercation" between Horton and the other woman, which is said to have left Horton's alleged attacker with a bloodied mouth and a missing tooth.

A few minutes after the alleged assault, a woman was shot and killed at Augie's Cabaret one block north on Hennepin Avenue, though police told the Star Tribune the two incidents aren't linked.

Second incident in October

It is the second time this month that a woman has been deliberately hit by a car in downtown Minneapolis.

In the early hours of Oct. 3, a 21-year-old woman was left seriously injured after being struck by a car near 8th Street and LaSalle Avenue, KARE 11 reported.

Police told KSTP that a man and woman woman were fighting inside the car when the woman got out and climbed on the hood. Police say the man then drove away, causing the woman to fall off and hit her head, before he circled around and ran over her.

Police arrested and charged 21-year-old Owen Abdul Karin Michael Cisse, of St. Paul, with first-degree assault, with a judge then setting a $150,000 bail on Oct. 6, according to ABC 6.

In August, 37-year-old Angela D. Jackson, of Minneapolis, was charged with first-degree attempted premeditated murder after police say she intentionally ran over a man with her car following a spat at an Uptown Minneapolis bar Aug. 15.
