Woman jumps from I-94 bridge, leaves young daughter in car

A Wisconsin woman jumped to her death from the Interstate 94 bridge over the St. Croix River Thursday morning while her child waited in the car, the Pioneer Press reports.

Witnesses say the 48-year-old woman from Pierce County was traveling with her 11-year-old daughter before pulling over on the eastbound shoulder of the bridge, 100 yards from the Wisconsin shoreline.

The woman got out, climbed the bridge railing and jumped about 55 feet onto the ice-covered river.

Emergency vehicles shut down one lane of traffic for over an hour while the body was being recovered by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The woman's identity is being withheld until family members are notified, the Hudson Star Observer says. Her body was taken to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson.

The 11-year-old girl is in the care of family members.
