Woman riding bike in Minneapolis dies after early morning crash

Her bike and a van collided.

A woman was killed while riding a bike in Minneapolis early Thursday morning.

Police were called to a crash at the intersection of Lowry Ave. N. and 2nd St. N. at 5:42 a.m., the Minneapolis Police Department said in a news release.

Authorities say the biker going north on 2nd St. collided with a van heading west on Lowry.

The woman was taken by ambulance to North Memorial Hospital, where she died from injuries sustained in the crash. Her name has not yet been announced by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

The man driving the van stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, the release says.

A spokeswoman for the police department told GoMN that the intersection is controlled by a signal light, but that no other details are available at this time because authorities are still investigating.

As of last week, there had only been one bicyclist killed on Minnesota roads so far this year, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Four bicyclists had been killed by this time last year, the department says.
