Woman shot by state trooper after crash near Moorhead

A firearm was recovered at the scene.

A woman has been wounded by a police officer who opened fire following a crash in snowy conditions near Moorhead.

Interstate 94 shut down just east of Moorhead at 10:30 a.m. Monday, following an officer-involved shooting.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says a Minnesota state trooper arrived at the scene of a crash, finding a vehicle had lost control and struck the median.

After making contact with the two people in the car – a man and a woman – the officer discharged their weapon.

It hit the woman, who fled into a nearby field and was found later with a gunshot wound.

She was taken to Essentia Hospital in Fargo, while the man was taken into custody.

It's not been made clear what caused the trooper to open fire, but the BCA does note a firearm was recovered from the scene.

The trooper has been placed on standard paid leave while the shooting is investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
