Worker seriously injured after fall from new I-90 bridge site

A 19-year-old man working on the Interstate 90 bridge project was rushed to the hospital Wednesday morning after a 45-foot fall.

The La Crosse Tribune reports the construction worker was on the west bank of the Mississippi River near the construction site when he fell into a cofferdam, a temporary structure that holds back water, around 9 a.m.

WXOW says the man was trapped in a confined space below the bridge until a rescue boat could reach him.

He was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to emergency responders.

Construction to replace the I-90 bridge began last year and is expected to be completed in 2016. FOX 9 says the new crossing in Dresbach, Minn. is being built upstream of the existing I-90 bridge.
