Wrong-way driver chased by police, crashes on 494

A driver headed the wrong way on Interstate 494 Sunday as he was being chased by police, and crashed into two vehicles before being hit by a car himself, WCCO reports.

The crash happened in Richfield on eastbound I-494 near Lyndale Avenue, just east of Interstate 35W, about 12:15 p.m.

Officers from the Bloomington police department wanted to pull the man over to question him; he is a suspect in a sexual assault case. But when they tried to pull him over near American Boulevard and Portland Avenue, he tried to drive off, according to KSTP.

The officers were able to stop the car, and the suspect got out of the vehicle and appeared to be cooperating with police. But he then got back into his car and fled, WCCO reports.

The suspect headed westbound, but drove onto an eastbound ramp to I-494 into oncoming traffic and collided with two vehicles. According to police, he then got out of his car and crossed onto westbound 494 on foot when he was hit by a car that had attempted to stop.

The suspect and two people involved in the collision all suffered minor injuries. The suspect is in custody.

Traffic on 494 was backed up for a time until the accident scene was cleared.
