Xcel's Sherco plant back online after $200 million repair

Xcel Energy's Sherco 3 power plant in Becker, Minn. is back in service.

The St Cloud Times said that the generator there was heavily damaged by a turbine failure almost two years ago and Unit 3 has been offline since. The incident was blamed on stress corrosion linked to the blades’ original design. The other two units at Sherco were not damaged in the accident.

Xcel described it as one of the worst mechanical failures in company history.

The Associated Press reported that the cost of the repair was estimated at more than $200 million, with insurance expected to cover most of that expense. But the Star Tribune notes the replacement power the utility purchased from other generators cost $64 million. That expense is passed on to ratepayers.
