Yep, it's road repair season: Weekend closings, detours and slowdowns

The calendar and the thermometer indicate that it's still spring, but the number of road closings and detours greeting Minnesota motorists this weekend might lead them to feel like they're stalled in slowdowns more typical of summer.

KARE notes that the weekend snags include a heavily used Twin Cities interstate in the northwest metro. Two extended stretches of I-694 will be completely shut down as crews work on the corridor north central west project.

Westbound I-694 between Hwy 10 in Arden Hills and Hwy 65 in Fridley will be closed from Friday, May 16 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 19. Traffic on westbound I-694 between Hwy 65 and East River Road will be single lane. Detour: Take Hwy 10 to Hwy 610 to Hwy 252.

Eastbound I-694 will be closed between Xerxes Avenue and Hwy 252 from Friday, May 16 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 19. Traffic will be diverted onto eastbound I-94, parallel to I-694, and back onto eastbound I-694 at Hwy 252.

Here's a map from the Minnesota Department of Transportation that may help you plot your trip.

In addition, expect a slowdown around Highway 10 in Anoka and Coon Rapids. The Transportation Department says that Highway 10 between Fairoak Avenue and Hanson Boulevard will have nightly lane closures beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing through 5 a.m. each following morning. The closures are anticipated to last through the end of the month.
In the east metro, the ramp from southbound I-35E to Victoria Street and the ramp from Victoria Street to northbound I-35E are closed until June 16. There is a detour marked with signs. These ramps closed so crews can route a natural gas pipeline along Victoria Street beneath the interstate.

There are also closures along I-35 in the Lakeville area. Northbound I-35 between County Road 50 and County Road 2 has lane closures, and southbound I-35 between County Road 50 and County Road 70 is a single lane, with traffic traveling head-to-head on the northbound lanes. The Transportation Department website also notes that Highway 50 to southbound I-35 is closed, and southbound I-35 to 185th Street/County Road 60 is closed.

Southbound Highway 169 between Hwy 62 and Valley View Road remains closed until early July. Southbound traffic is detoured to westbound Hwy 212 and eastbound I-494.
