Yes, there's a Minnesota golf course opening this weekend

They didn't open until March 6 last year, and they waited until April 26 in 2013.

Our crack staff of researchers here at GoMN just found out that winter doesn't officially end until March 20. That's like almost 40 days away.

But later this week you'll be able to start golfing on at least one Minnesota course.

Tanners Brook in Forest Lake – about 30 miles north of Minneapolis – is opening Sunday for real rounds of golf. Their Pro Shop phone has been ringing off the hook.

"I've had over 100 [calls] in the last two days," manager Craig Brischke told GoMN. "I've done nothing but answer the phone. I'm not getting any of the work done that I need to to get the course ready."

The mid-February opening for Tanners Brook is unprecedented. The earliest the course has opened in the past was March 6 last year. They didn't open until April 26 in 2013.

Brischke said course conditions are good because there wasn't a lot of snow this year. He expects all of the remaining snow to be completely gone by Sunday.

But please, don't call Craig today. Tanners Brook is not taking tee times for Sunday's opening until 10 a.m. Thursday – and they're expected to sell out about as fast as that upcoming Lady Gaga concert at Xcel Energy Center. Once the tee times are filled they'll have a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The weather is supposed to be warm enough this week that there's a chance Brischke has the course ready to go on Saturday, he said.

Either way, Brischke expects the course will stay open through at least Wednesday next week. Then they'll stay open or close up depending on the weather.
