Young man killed by Northstar train in Elk River

Metro Transit says the young man was walking on the tracks.

One person was killed after being struck by a Northstar train in Elk River Sunday evening.

According to Metro Transit Public Relations Manager Howie Padilla, a man walking on the westbound tracks and struck around 6 p.m. and died at the scene.

"While it’s early in the investigation, we believe two individuals were walking on the tracks, also westbound," Padilla said in an email to GoMN.

"One of the individuals became alerted that the train was coming and was able to jump out of the way. The other, a male young adult or teenager, was not able to leave the tracks before being struck. He died at the scene."

Metro Transit is working with the Elk River Police Department and Sherburne County Sheriff's Office to reconstruct the incident.

According to KARE, it happened near 192nd Avenue (Cty. Rd. 35) and Ogden Street, which is on the west side of Elk River.
