It's not that often that an opportunity to buy a home on Nicollet Island arises, so it's worthy of note when one goes on the market.

And the one currently selling for $1.15 million on the spit of land bisecting the Mississippi between downtown and northeast Minneapolis is more notable than many, given its history.

According to the listing on Edina Realty's website, the "Meader-Farnham House" dates back to the 1860s when it was originally built downtown as a boarding house.

It was moved to the island, part of the St. Anthony Falls Historic District, in 1985 and reconstructed on a new foundation.

It's a rare opportunity because Nicollet Island is home to only a few dozen houses and in the 2000 Census had a population of just under 150 people. The City of Minneapolis website states that of the homes on the island, all but two were built between 1864 and 1898.

For $1.15 million, you get a 4,336-square-foot property with five bedrooms and five bathrooms.

Pictures of the home as it is now shows the quirky style stamped on the property by its current owners, who told Edina Realty they styled it as if they were creating a "movie set" to call home.

The Star Tribune wrote a feature on the property, noting the home retains many of its original architectural features, including windows and wood-inlay mosaic floors, while new additions include a marble-clad fireplace and three wood-burning stoves.

One of the current owners, a passionate gardener, had transformed the surroundings into a "secret garden" of trees, shrubs and perennials, the newspaper notes.

There is one other property among the handful on Nicollet Island currently for sale, a 1,720-square-foot townhouse on the market for $589,900, according to Trulia.
