Blood, brains, and 30+ bands at the Zombie Pub Crawl Saturday night

Start applying your makeup and fake blood – the Zombie Pub Crawl takes over downtown Minneapolis tonight.

Prepare yourselves – the world's largest zombie horde is coming Saturday night.

Since 2005, the annual Zombie Pub Crawl has been a huge event in downtown Minneapolis, with dozens of bars participating each year.

This year's party for the undead features more than 30 live bands, and for the first time ever, a costume contest, the website says.

But you can't just show up in your zombie garb – you must buy a ticket and redeem it for a wristband.

Here's what your wristband will get you:

Entry into dozens of venues with live music

With 30+ artists playing on 12 different stages (including two outdoor ones), there's no shortage of entertainment at this year's ZPC.

Rocker and king of partying Andrew W.K. will headline the stage at Mill City Nights with a lineup of local acts like Mark Mallman, Bloodnstuff, The Blind Shake, and Whiskey Rock 'n' Roll Club MPLS.

If you're feeling nostalgic, check out Smashmouth playing on the outdoor "B" Stage at 8:45 p.m., or go see Ja Rule at First Ave around 11:30 p.m.

Other headliners include brotherly rap duo Rae Sremmund and Zomboy.

See the full list of entertainers and performance times on the ZPC website, including a map of all the bars and stages.

First-ever costume contest

It starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the "B" Stage at 1st Ave. N & 4th St., the website says.

Zombie costumes will be judged by four categories: makeup, costume, creativity, and performance – that means lurching, shouting "BRAAAINS," and basically, acting the part.

Winners will get "generous prize packs," the website says, including free VIZ tickets for life. Those tickets are normally $100 each and come with VIP perks like private bathrooms and viewing areas, snacks, and other goodies.

There will be prizes for Best Zombie as well as Best Zombie Horde (2 or more people).

Take over the streets with the horde

It really is going to look like an episode of The Walking Dead – the ZPC has a legit Guinness World Record for "Largest gathering of zombies."

They earned the title in October 2014 with 15,458 participants, and they aim to beat the record every year.

The event will cause several street closures downtown from 8 a.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday, the city said in a news release.

Access will be limited to people who pay the entry fee, and people who live or work in the area will have to show identification, the release said.

And the ZPC recommends that people stay safe and leave their cars at home.
