20,000 holes, 10,000 anglers, 1 lake – it's Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza

It's that time of the year again, as 10,000 anglers head to Minnesota's Gull Lake for the largest ice fishing contest in the world.

The Brainerd Jaycees will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Ice Fishing Extravaganza this Saturday, with predicted warmer temperatures expected to bring a bumper to the lake.

Anglers will compete for a share of $150,000-worth of cash and prizes, the Grand Forks Herald reports, and whoever catches the biggest fish will get the choice of taking home a Ford or GMC truck.

Extravaganza chair Sarah Stenerson said this year's event will be a "big party," including a raffle with $40,000-worth of prizes, and a music concert planned at 7 p.m. at the NP Center in Brainerd.

Last year the event raised more than $136,000 for 44 area charities in spite of the cold weather, the Herald notes, with more than $150,000 expected to be raised this year, according to WJON.

Those taking part can get their hole on the ice starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at Hole-in-the-Day Bay on the lake, with fishing officially beginning at noon and ending at 3 p.m.

Drunken driving warning

Police have warned anglers that officers will be carrying out extra patrols in the Gull Lake area as they crack down on drunken driving.

The Brainerd Dispatch report officers from Brainerd, Baxter and Nisswa will be patrolling roads around the lake during the ice fishing extravaganza.

"As a reminder to everyone, plan ahead for a safe and sober ride," Brainerd officer Tony Runde told the newspaper.
