3 names have surfaced for Las Vegas hockey team, all involving one word

Earlier this summer the NHL announced the city of Las Vegas was awarded an expansion team that will begin play in the 2017-18 season.

But more than two months after being granted a team, owner Bill Foley is having trouble picking a nickname for the franchise.

When the team was first announced, Foley expressed interest in the name "Black Knights" as a nod to the Army. Foley is a 1967 graduate of West Point.

However in a recent radio interview, Foley said  there was some push-back from West Point and others, so the name was dropped.

Now Yahoo Sports reports that three names have surfaced on, all involving the word Hawks: The Desert Hawks, the Red Hawks or the Nighthawks.

The three names have been registered with several domain names owned by Black Knight IP Holding Company, LLC, which is a company owned by Foley.

On Aug. 3, the Las Vegas Sun reported that a name would be chosen for the team in the coming weeks.
