36-year head coach of Cobber baseball to step down after 2014 season

Author:

Bucky Burgau is a legend around the Minnesota baseball community, and it didn't take long after today's announcement of his pending retirement for those that know him to express that.

The first ever man to reach 400 career MIAC baseball wins says he is stepping down after the 2014 season, also saying he wouldn't leave without the program being in capable hands.

The InForum in Fargo had the quote from Burgau: “I don’t think I’d be doing this if it was anybody but Chris Coste."

Coste is a former player of Burgau's, and the only MIAC baseball player to ever win a World Series, which he did in 2008 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Coste has been an assistant of Burgau's since the middle of 2011.

Some of Burgau's other accomplishments include being the second most tenured coach in the conference behind St. John's Jerry Haugen, winning four MIAC Coach of the Year awards, and sitting 12th on the active list in career wins among Division III coaches.

His squad made it to the MIAC Championship game last year before being eliminated by powerhouse St. Thomas.
