Gophers: Top in-state recruit Jeff Jones won't visit Florida, Michigan

Publish date:

Minnesota's chances of landing four-star recruit Jeff Jones are looking better with two major college football powers falling out of the race.

According to the Star Tribune, Minneapolis Washburn running back Jeff Jones canceled his plans to take official visits to Florida and Michigan, which were schedule to happen over the next two weekends.

Jones verbally committed to the Gophers last February, with plans to keep his options open. Jones gained the attention of higher profile schools after excelling in the Under Armour All-American Game, in which he was named his team's MVP.

Jones is ranked as the 44th overall recruit by Rivals. In contrast, ESPN's Recruiting Nation lists him as the 137th best player in the Class of 2014. As for his position, Rivals ranks Jones as the seventh best running back in the country while ESPN ranks him No. 12.

Jones has yet to qualify academically for a scholarship, but he is very close, according to Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune.

He was named Minnesota's Mr. Football in December.
