The track is flat, but the atmosphere is not.

If deer hunting is not your cup of tea, consider spending some of your weekend with the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, which is holding its 2015 international championship in St. Paul Friday through Sunday.

As the Pioneer Press reports, teams from Great Britain, Australia, Texas, New York, and Los Angeles are among those joining the hosting Minnesota RollerGirls at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

A typical RollerGirls bout in St. Paul features four Minnesota teams competing against each other. But for this weekend's championship event, they've culled the best skaters from all the local squads to form an all-star team of sorts.

Even so, Chrissy Sampson – aka "Crust Almighty" – tells MPR News the RollerGirls will have their hands full, since they're matched up against a team from Texas and "they kind of kicked our butt last time."

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association is more extensive than you might realize, with 267 teams listed in last month's rankings.

For those already familiar with the WFTDA (this is their 10th annual championship, after all) ESPN profiles eight new up-and-comers to watch at "The Roy."
