The Minnesota Lynx were defending their spot atop the WNBA's Western Conference Sunday night. But all the buzz at tip-off was about an off-court development: guard Monica Wright's reported engagement to NBA all-star Kevin Durant.
The gossip website Hollywood Life reported that Wright accepted the proposal of the three-time scoring champ on Saturday night.
Their long friendship became more public in May. Durant happened to be in Minnesota watching Wright and the Lynx play when he made a $1 million donation to help victims of the tornado that swept through Moore, Oklahoma. Durant stars for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Fox Sports North reported in that May story that the two met while they were high school All-Americans each playing in an all-star game in San Diego. After a standout college career at the University of Virginia, Wright was the scond player drafted in the 2010 WNBA draft. She has yet to crack the starting lineup with the Lynx but has been a key reserve behind guards Seimone Augustus and Lindsey Whalen.
Media Takeout has a photo of Wright showing off her new engagement ring.
But of course the subject of rings always brings out the snarkiness in basketball fans, who know that for all his scoring titles, Olympic gold medal, all-NBA teams, and Rookie of the Year award ... Durant lacks an NBA title ring.
