They can't say why, but the Thief River Falls school district suspended all of the players on its boys hockey team this week – and the members of the junior varsity team, too.

High school superintendent Bradley Bergstrom told Forum News Service allegations about misbehavior by the teams led the district to hire an investigator to interview the players, whose parents were allowed to be there for the questioning. Bergstrom says privacy laws prevent the school from getting into specifics.

The suspensions are for a week and they started on Monday. That means the varsity team has cancelled and forfeited home games against Crookston on Thursday and against St. Cloud Cathedral on Saturday.

While all the players on both teams are suspended, the Star Tribune reports Bergstrom said that does not mean every player was involved in the inappropriate behavior. “The action of the district is meant to embrace that a team rises and falls together," he said. "We take all allegations seriously. We are providing an educational component designed to prevent these types of things from happening again.”

Thief River Falls police chief Dick Wittenberg told radio station KVRR there's a separate investigation underway that focuses on the Bantam A hockey team, which includes 8th and 9th graders. He told the station it involves inappropriate behavior but was not more specific.
