Nobody predicted a final between Alexandria and Orono, but that's what it'll be Saturday when they meet in the Class A boys' hockey championship game.
No. 3 Orono beat No. 2 Mahtomedi 5-4 in overtime on a game-winning goal swatted out of the air by Dane Korsi.
Alexandria then continued its incredible run with a 6-1 win over the two-time defending champion Hermantown Hawks.
Jack Powell led the Cardinals with a hat-trick and goalie Jackson Boline, who shut out Thief River Falls in the quarterfinals, was a brick wall again with 33 saves.
Alexandria wasn't even expected to make it to the tourney. They were huge underdogs against St. Cloud Cathedral in their section final but they stunned the Crusaders and followed it with a 1-0 win over Thief River Falls in the first round on Wednesday.
Now they find themselves in the championship game as the team that finally unseated Hermantown.
This marks the first time in eight years that Hermantown isn't in the championship game.
Even more impressive is that Hermantown has gone 64-0-1 in their last 65 regular season games against Class A teams, a streak they'll have an opportunity to continue next season.
