'All Lives Matter' lyrics in 'O Canada' cause stir at MLB All-Star Game

Author:

"The Tenors" gave a resounding rendition of "O Canada" before the start of Tuesday's Major League Baseball All-Star Game, with the exception of one singer changing the words to serve his own political views.

It happened about one minute into the song when one of the singers from the Canadian group altered the lyrics to say: "We're all brothers and sisters. All lives matter to the great."

The real lyrics are: "With glowing hearts we see thee rise. The True North strong and free."

Rolling Stone reports the song wasn't shown on TV in the United States – so you probably haven't seen the video yet.

The Tenors called the singer, Remigio Pereira, a "lone wolf" who disrespected Canada and the All-Star Game's traditions by using a massive stage to express his political views. For his actions, they suspended him from the group until further notice.

Pereira also held up a sign that read "All Lives Matter" on the front and "United We Stand" on the back.

"I've been so moved lately by the tragic loss of life and I hoped for a positive statement that would bring us ALL together. ONE LOVE. That was my singular motivation when I said all lives matter," Pereira explained on his Facebook page.

Pereira's actions come just over a week after two black men – Philandro Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana – were shot and killed by police.

ESPN points out the "All Lives Matter" phrase has been facing a lot of criticism because some believe it diminishes "the problems specifically facing blacks."
