American Pharoah will not race in Minnesota

Two-million dollars wasn't convincing enough to lure American Pharoah to Canterbury Park this summer.

In June, the horse racing track in Shakopee, Minnesota, offered the Triple Crown winner a shot at a $2 million purse at the Aug. 29 Mystic Lake Derby. Without American Pharoah, however, the race's purse will go back to its original amount of $200,000.

A $2 million purse would be equal to that of the Kentucky Derby.

Bob Baffert, the trainer of the horse, informed Canterbury Park Vice President Eric Halstrom over the weekend of the decision to decline the invitation, the Star Tribune reports.

“This was not a publicity stunt," Halstrom told the Star Tribune. "We did a lot of work to make sure we could pull this off. To put our name in conversation with a Triple Crown winner, it’s invaluable to have people talk about you in that way.’’

American Pharoah snapped a 37-year drought when it swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown.

Tracks across the country have submitted offers to Baffert, attempting to bring the super horse to their venues. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, American Pharoah will arrive at Del Mar race track in San Diego on Tuesday, but will not necessarily race there. His next scheduled race is Aug. 2 at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

Instead of American Pharoah racing in Shakopee, fans will have to settle for the next best thing: Camels and Zebras racing at Canterbury Park this Saturday, July 18 for Extreme Day.
