Apple Valley honors national champion, mayor declares 'Tyus Jones Day'

It was another big day in the life of Apple Valley native and Duke standout Tyus Jones. Before Jones was winning an NCAA national championship at Duke and declaring for the NBA Draft, the guard was helping to lead Apple Valley to a state championship.

On Wednesday the 18-year-old was honored in his hometown as Apple Valley Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland declared it "Tyus Jones Day."

FOX 9 notes the Apple Valley City Council and chamber of commerce recognized Jones at the Hayes Community Center, which was followed by a short parade to Apple Valley High School for a ceremony in the main gym, where his jersey was retired.

Jones finished with 23 points in Duke's national title victory over Wisconsin. He led the Blue Devils down the stretch, scoring 13 in the final 11 minutes. Jones was named the 2015 Final Four Most Outstanding Player.

Jones was also honored by the Twins during the team's home opener. He brought the ball out to Kevin Garnett, who threw out the opening pitch.

Last week, Jones announced that he would leave Duke after just one season and declare for the NBA Draft.
