Apple Valley's Gary Trent Jr. gets offer from Duke

Could Gary Trent Jr. be following the path of Tyus Jones?

The Apple Valley High School sophomore has a scholarship offer from Duke, he announced Monday on Twitter.

Numerous reporters have since tweeted confirmation.

Trent, 16, is seen as one of the top prospects of the 2017 class. ESPN has him as a 5-star recruit, as the top shooting guard available and eighth-best prospect overall. Rivals gives him a 4-star grade, and slots him 45th overall (but notes he'll be jumping up in the rankings soon.)

He's also the son of former Timberwolves player Gary Trent Sr.

On Sunday, he scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the FIBA Americas under-16 championship game against Canada, leading the U.S. team to the gold medal, Rivals reports. He was named MVP of the tournament after averaging 16.8 points and just under 3 rebounds per game. as Team USA remained undefeated.

The Star Tribune spoke with Trent Jr. a couple weeks ago, about how he's gotten better as a player (and grown a bit), and his current recruiting status.

In addition to Duke, Trent Jr.'s offers include the University of Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan State, Alabama, Flordia State, and possibly others.

Trent Jr. has also spoken publicly about wanting to play with fellow class of 2017 recruit Wendell Carter Jr., a 6-foot-10 player from Atlanta who's considered a top 10 prospect. He told ZagsBlog earlier this month the duo plans to attend the same school – and while both mentioned Duke is very interested, neither committed to leaning one way or the other.

If Trent Jr. did head to Duke, he'd be following fellow Apple Valley player Tyus Jones, who entered the NBA Draft this season after one season with the Blue Devils. As a freshman, he averaged 11.8 points per game and was named Most Outstanding Player for his performance in the title game against Wisconsin.

Jones tweeted at Trent Jr. Monday following the Duke offer news – and seems to be suggesting his plan was a good one:
